Carajathemis simone n. gen., n.sp. from the state of Pará, Brazil, is described and illustrated based on 22 specimens collected in a "canga" (laterite) lake within the forest at the Flona de Carajás, Parauapebas Municipality. The new libellulid genus fits in the subfamily Sympetrinae and the male keys out to Erythemis in Garrison et al. (2006). The new taxon has a combination of characters that makes it different from all genera of Sympetrinae including Erythemis. The species is remarkable by its large size, pleural striping and especially by the complex and strongly dimorphic leg armature. It seems to be restricted to shallow, rainfall-dependent, iron-rich lakes. |

Several studies have focused on understanding the biochemistry and morphology of the fat body of the hematophagous mosquito Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae). In contrast, few studies, if any, have focused on morphological characters of the fat body in other mosquitoes, especially non-hematophagous taxa such as the culicid Toxorhynchites. Larvae of Toxorhynchites prey upon the larvae of other mosquito species and are used in vector mosquito control. We investigated aspects of the fat body trophocytes, including the morphometric analyses of the lipid droplets, protein granules and nuclei, during Toxorhynchites theobaldi (Dyar & Knab) post-embryonic development. Following the body weight increase from larval stage L2 to L4, the size of lipid... |

This study describes morphological changes in the male reproductive system of Miroculis amazonicus (Savage & Peters) from mature nymphs to subimago stages. The sperm ultrastructure of Massartela brieni (Lestage), Farrodes carioca (Domínguez et al) and Miroculis mourei (Savage & Peters), as well as aspects of cell fragments observed in these species' subimagos deferent ducts were described. Sperm from the three species studied are aflagellated and immotile, while those from F. carioca and Ma. brieni are approximately spherical with a homogenous nucleus and acrosome. Sperm of F. carioca present two or three mitochondria located between the nucleus and the acrosome. In Ma. brieni, only one lateral mitochondria was found. Sperm from Mi. mourei... |

ABSTRACT Although mango is one of the tropical fruits of greater interest in the world trade, literature concerning their rootstocks (characteristics and utilization) is scarce. This study aimed to characterize mango plants from cv. Imbú, widely used as rootstock in the Zona da Mata region, State of Minas Gerais (MG), Brazil. Though fruits of this cultivar do not present desirable commercial characteristics, this study allowed us to characterize part of plant morphology and fill a gap in the literature, providing subsidies for future investigations. For such, 'Imbú' plants (˜ 4-years old) from the collection of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, located in Viçosa -MG were evaluated. The descriptors were: (i) leaf blade division;(ii) leaf composition;... |

ABSTRACT This study described the initial development of Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum, as well as changes in growth patterns. Morphometric and meristic variables were analyzed during embryonic, larval and juvenile periods, even as allometric growth coefficients for larvae and juveniles. Eggs showed an average diameter of 1.79 mm and broad perivitelline space (23.41%). The total length (TL) of the larvae ranged from 3.05 to 25.72 mm, and the total number of myomeres ranged from 45 to 50 (preanal = 13-16 and postanal = 30-35). Initial pigmentation is poor, concentrated at the extremities of the yolk sac. In the flexion stage, the pigmentation intensifies and forms a longitudinal stripe extending from the snout to the operculum and two longitudinal stripes on... |

Azedinha (Rumex acetosa) is a vegetable crop species consumed in natura in salads and pertains to the group of non-conventional vegetables. These rustic plants are often considered weeds plants. There exist two types of native azedinha in the Sete Lagoas region, Minas Gerais state, Brazil, that are usually grown in family gardens and here denominated Type I and Type II. In this study we characterized the morphologic, physic-chemical and chromatic characteristic of these two types of azedinha. The study was carried out in randomized complete blocks with four replications in dependences of the EPAMIG (Non-Conventional Vegetable Bank) in Prudente de Morais, Brazil. Plants were trained to the point of harvest, 90 days after the planting of seedlings, when they... |

Coenosia wulpi Pont, 1972 (Diptera, Muscidae, Coenosiinae) is the only Coenosia Meigen, 1826 species recorded from Mexico. It is known only from the holotype male deposited at "The Natural History Museum" collection (London, United Kingdom). A series of five males and seven females was found at California Academy of Sciences collection (San Francisco, California), which enabled the redescription of the male, and the description of the female and the male and female terminalia, for the first time. |

In Corydoradinae, the presence of spermatids in the lumen of the testicular tubules together with spermatozoa suggests that spermatogenesis is of the semicystic type, whereas in Callichthyinae, sperm production occurs entirely within spermatocysts in the germinal epithelium, characterizing cystic spermatogenesis. Spermiogenesis in Callichthyinae is characterized by an initial lateral development of the flagellum, the presence of nuclear rotation to different degrees, an eccentric or medial formation of a nuclear fossa, formation of a cytoplasmic channel, and presence of centriolar migration, being more similar to type I spermiogenesis. In Corydoradinae, spermiogenesis is characterized by eccentric development of the flagellum, the absence of nuclear... |

The anatomy of the internal organs of the male reproductive apparatus (MRA) of adults and pupae was compared among 51 species of bees, including representatives of six families. Four different types of MRA were found. The type I is present in males of the less derived families (Colletidae, Andrenidae, and Halictidae) and is characterized by three seminiferous tubules per testis, which are almost completely enveloped by the scrotal membrane. The type II is an intermediary between types III and I and is present in Melittidae and Megachilidae, as well as in some Apidae studied, being characterized by post-vesicular deferent ducts outside the scrotal membrane and by three or four seminiferous tubules per testis, except for Apis mellifera L., which has a... |

The epidermal features of the leaves of the six West African species of Afzelia were examined and compared using light and scanning electron microscopy. The leaves are hypostomatic in all species and stomatal type is paracytic. Anticlinal walls may be undulate or straight-curved and stomatal index ranges from 17.48% in A. bella var. gracilior to 25.20% in A. bipindensis. Porrect and flattened scales distinguish the infra-specific taxa of A. bella while presence of unicellular trichomes separates A. pachyloba from other species. The leaf surface is entirely covered by epicuticular wax deposits and the stomata are either raised or sunken in the genus. Using these foliar epidermal characters, an artificial key has been prepared to facilitate identification of... |
