Carajathemis simone, new genus and species from Brazil (Odonata: Libellulidae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Machado,Angelo B.M..
Carajathemis simone n. gen., n.sp. from the state of Pará, Brazil, is described and illustrated based on 22 specimens collected in a "canga" (laterite) lake within the forest at the Flona de Carajás, Parauapebas Municipality. The new libellulid genus fits in the subfamily Sympetrinae and the male keys out to Erythemis in Garrison et al. (2006). The new taxon has a combination of characters that makes it different from all genera of Sympetrinae including Erythemis. The species is remarkable by its large size, pleural striping and especially by the complex and strongly dimorphic leg armature. It seems to be restricted to shallow, rainfall-dependent, iron-rich lakes.

Cell death induced by tamoxifen in human blood lymphocytes cultivated in vitro - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v32i4.7015 Biological Sciences
Oliveira, Naila Francis Paulo de; UNICAMP; Genari, Selma Candelária; UNICAMP; Dolder, Heidi; UNICAMP.
Many chemotherapeutic agents with a potential against solid tumors or leukemia can cause lymphopenia. Tamoxifen (TAM) is a synthetic non-steroidal anti-estrogen drug employed in female breast cancer treatment. The present study investigated the capacity of TAM to induce cell death in human lymphocytes cultivated in vitro. Lymphocytes were obtained from young (25-30 years; n = 3) and elderly women (58-77 years; n = 3) and cultivated for 24 or 48h, with or without TAM (20 µM). After the culture, cell viability, immunocytochemical response and ultrastructure were evaluated. TAM affected lymphocytes in a time- dependent manner, and cells obtained from elderly women were the most sensitive to TAM. Immunocytochemical analysis evidenced higher frequency...

Ceramium nitens (Ceramiaceae, Rhodophyta), an uncommon species from Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
FUJII,MUTUE TOYOTA; COCENTINO,ADILMA L.M.; PEREIRA,SONIA M. B..
Morphological studies on Ceramium nitens (C. Agardh) J. Agardh, a completely corticated species, were carried out based on specimens rediscovered in Brazil fifty years after its first record. Its occurrence in Brazil was considered doubtful since it had been collected only once since 1945. Ceramium nitens can be recognized by having axial cells entirely covered by cortical cells, except for the cells near the apex, obscuring the nodal and internodal banding thalli, characteristic of most Ceramium species. In this paper the occurrence of Ceramium nitens in Brazil is confirmed and its vegetative and tetrasporangial structures are described in detail and their implications for the taxonomy of the genera Ceramium, Centroceras and Corallophila are discussed....

Changes in the fat body during the post-embryonic development of the predator Toxorhynchites theobaldi (Dyar & Knab) (Diptera: Culicidae) Neotropical Entomology
Pascini,TV; Albeny,DS; Ramalho-Ortigão,M; Vilela,EF; Serrão,JE; Martins,GF.
Several studies have focused on understanding the biochemistry and morphology of the fat body of the hematophagous mosquito Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae). In contrast, few studies, if any, have focused on morphological characters of the fat body in other mosquitoes, especially non-hematophagous taxa such as the culicid Toxorhynchites. Larvae of Toxorhynchites prey upon the larvae of other mosquito species and are used in vector mosquito control. We investigated aspects of the fat body trophocytes, including the morphometric analyses of the lipid droplets, protein granules and nuclei, during Toxorhynchites theobaldi (Dyar & Knab) post-embryonic development. Following the body weight increase from larval stage L2 to L4, the size of lipid...

CHARACTERIZATION OF LEAVES AND FRUITS OF MANGO (Mangifera indica L.) CV. IMBU Rev. Bras. Frutic.
VIECCELLI,JULIANA CRISTINA; SIQUEIRA,DALMO LOPES DE; BISPO,WILKA MESSNER DA SILVA; LEMOS,LORENA MOREIRA CARVALHO.
ABSTRACT Although mango is one of the tropical fruits of greater interest in the world trade, literature concerning their rootstocks (characteristics and utilization) is scarce. This study aimed to characterize mango plants from cv. Imbú, widely used as rootstock in the Zona da Mata region, State of Minas Gerais (MG), Brazil. Though fruits of this cultivar do not present desirable commercial characteristics, this study allowed us to characterize part of plant morphology and fill a gap in the literature, providing subsidies for future investigations. For such, 'Imbú' plants (˜ 4-years old) from the collection of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, located in Viçosa -MG were evaluated. The descriptors were: (i) leaf blade division;(ii) leaf composition;...

Characterization of the early development of Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889 (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) from the Paraguay River Basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Andrade,Fernanda F.; Lima,Ariane F.; Assumpção,Lucileine; Makrakis,Sergio; Kasai,Rodrigo I. D.; Makrakis,Maristela C..
ABSTRACT This study described the initial development of Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum, as well as changes in growth patterns. Morphometric and meristic variables were analyzed during embryonic, larval and juvenile periods, even as allometric growth coefficients for larvae and juveniles. Eggs showed an average diameter of 1.79 mm and broad perivitelline space (23.41%). The total length (TL) of the larvae ranged from 3.05 to 25.72 mm, and the total number of myomeres ranged from 45 to 50 (preanal = 13-16 and postanal = 30-35). Initial pigmentation is poor, concentrated at the extremities of the yolk sac. In the flexion stage, the pigmentation intensifies and forms a longitudinal stripe extending from the snout to the operculum and two longitudinal stripes on...

Silva,Ernani C da; Carlos,Lanamar de A; Araújo,Ana Paula; Ferraz,Leila de CL; Pedrosa,Marinalva W; Silva,Luana Sabrine.
Azedinha (Rumex acetosa) is a vegetable crop species consumed in natura in salads and pertains to the group of non-conventional vegetables. These rustic plants are often considered weeds plants. There exist two types of native azedinha in the Sete Lagoas region, Minas Gerais state, Brazil, that are usually grown in family gardens and here denominated Type I and Type II. In this study we characterized the morphologic, physic-chemical and chromatic characteristic of these two types of azedinha. The study was carried out in randomized complete blocks with four replications in dependences of the EPAMIG (Non-Conventional Vegetable Bank) in Prudente de Morais, Brazil. Plants were trained to the point of harvest, 90 days after the planting of seedlings, when they...

Chironomus amissum sp. n. (Diptera, Chironomidae) from southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Correia,Leny Célia da Silva; Trivinho-Strixino,Susana; Michailova,Paraskeva.
The paper presents a description of larva, pupa, imago (male) and karyotype of Chironomus amissum from southeastern Brazil. It belongs to pseudothummi cytocomplex with 2n=8 and chromosome arm combinations: AE BF CD G. Several fixed homozygous inversions distinguished arm A of the new species from that of Chironomus columbiensis Wülker et al. 1989 and Chironomus anonymus Williston, 1896. One homozygous inversion of arm F differentiated it from C. anonymus. Species-specific characters were presented in the larva, pupa and imago.

Coexistence of an Axillary Arch Muscle (Latissimocondyloideus Muscle) with an Unusual Axillary Artery Branching: Case Report and Review International Journal of Morphology
Soubhagya,R. Nayak; Latha,V. Prabhu; Ashwin,K; Madhan,Kumar S. J.; C. Ganesh,Kumar.
The axilla is a relatively small pyramidal compartment between the thoracic wall and the arm, which contains muscles and vital neurovascular bundles. They are important for their clinical and morphological reasons. We report an anomalous latissimocondyloideus muscle and a rare variant of the axillary artery, which lies beneath the anomalous muscle. The anomaly is one of its kind. The morphology and the clinical significance of the muscle have been reviewed

Comparative analysis of morphological, structural and morphometric patterns of Polistes versicolor (Olivier) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) hypopharyngeal glands Neotropical Entomology
Britto,Fábio B.; Caetano,Flávio H.; Moraes,Regina L.M.S. de.
Using ultramorphological and histochemical techniques, this study describes the structural and morphological patterns of Polistes versicolor (Olivier) hypopharyngeal glands, comparing them with patterns of other Hymenopteran groups. Besides, the presence of intra-specific variation was evidenced by morphometric analysis of the secretory cells in wasps with different ages. The studied species presented glands with primitive characteristics, with secretory cells discharging individually in the hypopharyngeal plate. The morphological pattern found in hypopharyngeal glands was basically the same for all studied wasps, however, the length of glandular cells showed significant variations between individuals. Apparently these variations are not related with age.

Comparative analysis of spermiogenesis and sperm ultrastructure in Callichthyidae (Teleostei: Ostariophysi: Siluriformes) Neotropical Ichthyology
Spadella,Maria A.; Oliveira,Claudio; Quagio-Grassiotto,Irani.
In Corydoradinae, the presence of spermatids in the lumen of the testicular tubules together with spermatozoa suggests that spermatogenesis is of the semicystic type, whereas in Callichthyinae, sperm production occurs entirely within spermatocysts in the germinal epithelium, characterizing cystic spermatogenesis. Spermiogenesis in Callichthyinae is characterized by an initial lateral development of the flagellum, the presence of nuclear rotation to different degrees, an eccentric or medial formation of a nuclear fossa, formation of a cytoplasmic channel, and presence of centriolar migration, being more similar to type I spermiogenesis. In Corydoradinae, spermiogenesis is characterized by eccentric development of the flagellum, the absence of nuclear...

Comparative anatomy of the male reproductive internal organs of 51 species of bees Neotropical Entomology
Ferreira,Amilton; Abdalla,Fábio C.; Kerr,Warwick E.; Cruz-Landim,Carminda da.
The anatomy of the internal organs of the male reproductive apparatus (MRA) of adults and pupae was compared among 51 species of bees, including representatives of six families. Four different types of MRA were found. The type I is present in males of the less derived families (Colletidae, Andrenidae, and Halictidae) and is characterized by three seminiferous tubules per testis, which are almost completely enveloped by the scrotal membrane. The type II is an intermediary between types III and I and is present in Melittidae and Megachilidae, as well as in some Apidae studied, being characterized by post-vesicular deferent ducts outside the scrotal membrane and by three or four seminiferous tubules per testis, except for Apis mellifera L., which has a...

COMPARATIVE FOLIAR EPIDERMAL MORPHOLOGY OF THE WEST AFRICAN SPECIES OF THE GENUS AFZELIA SMITH (LEGUMINOSAE: AESALPINIOIDEAE) Gayana Botánica
Babalola Kadiri,Akeem; Dele Olowokudejo,James.
The epidermal features of the leaves of the six West African species of Afzelia were examined and compared using light and scanning electron microscopy. The leaves are hypostomatic in all species and stomatal type is paracytic. Anticlinal walls may be undulate or straight-curved and stomatal index ranges from 17.48% in A. bella var. gracilior to 25.20% in A. bipindensis. Porrect and flattened scales distinguish the infra-specific taxa of A. bella while presence of unicellular trichomes separates A. pachyloba from other species. The leaf surface is entirely covered by epicuticular wax deposits and the stomata are either raised or sunken in the genus. Using these foliar epidermal characters, an artificial key has been prepared to facilitate identification of...
